Skiers in Kananaskis, AlbertaWanna ski for free in the Canadian Rockies? Head to Kananaskis, Calgary’s closest mountain, an easy hour and a half drive from Calgary. While it may be pricey to downhill ski at Kananaskis, cross-country skiing here is always free.

Since the miles of scenic, machine – groomed trails surrounding Kananaskis Village are owned by the province even the parking is free; look for the “Public Parking” sign near the Delta Kananaskis.If you don’t have your own equipment, on-site Kananaskis Outfitters will provide full, state of the art gear for a very reasonable $20.00 for a half day or $25.00 for a full day.

Beginners will want to stick to the Terrace Trail starting near the hockey rink. To add a bit more challenge (small hills) add on the 1.9-kilometer Aspen Trail for a fun and easy two and a half-hour combined trip. Experienced skiers with more time will want to head to Ribbon Creek or try the trails that take in the beautiful Kananaskis Golf Course.

Those who wish to stay overnight should check Delta Lodge at¬†Kananaskis for online specials. The Signature rooms including a deluxe continental breakfast and filling hors d’oeuvres served from 4-6 p.m. along with an “honor” bar set beside a large wood-burning fireplace are well worth the splurge.

Direct flights are available from Toronto to Calgary several times daily on Air Canada and West Jet.

Enterprise car rentals offer excellent weekend rates and free pick-up and drop-off service.
