A must see on The Empire State Plaza,”The Egg” is Albany’s pride and joy. A two theater performing arts center and the beacon that greets visitors to downtown Albany, The Egg is almost as much fun outside as it is in.

Albany became the capital of New York in 1797. One of the oldest American cities, Albany celebrates its 400th birthday in 2014.  Within a two block radius you will find fascinating architecture, from the classical New York State Capitol completed in 1899, to the early 60’s modernism of The Empire State Plaza.

The Empire State Plaza, then Governor Rockefeller’s controversial urban design,  features reflecting pools to mirror the surrounding four towers, The New York State Museum and various sculptures. Rumour has it the towers were mistaken for New York World Trade towers on Sept 11, 2001. Regardless, a photographers delight.

The New York State Museum features a diverse collection ranging from local artifacts such as the “rocket car” to a working early 20th century carousel to a show of contemporary Caribbean and Latin American art.

Housed in a beautiful building, the Albany Institute of History and Art appeals to all with traveling shows of American Impressionists,contemporary “iceberg” paintings and a mummy room with real specimens to delight the kids.

 

Washington Park
Washington Park

Washington Park, Albany’s answer to Central Park,  serves as a meeting place for various seasonal festivals. In 1998, The American Association of Architects named Washington Park as one of the nation’s 100 most important parks.

Capital Hills, Albany’s favorite golf course is packed on Sunday mornings as duffers of all abilities try to avoid the old trees and numerous sand bunkers that protect the greens.

Since 2000, Capital Hills Golf Course has played host to the Credit Union Challenge, a tournament for pro women golfers on the Symetra Tour, the LPGA’s developmental tour.
