Visitors heading to New York City should consider these money-saving tips:
Traveling to NYC:
Mega Bus offers reasonably priced travel with free wi-fi, power outlets and top deck seats, although arrival times are often at least an hour later than scheduled due to unpredictable border crossing times etc. The earlier you book, the cheaper the fare, but all fares are non-refundable, though full credit is available for future trips. Changing your itinerary can be costly if you’re booking for an earlier date as the cheap seats go fast.
Amtrak is worth a look but the border crossing times can be even longer.
Staying in NYC:
Stay at newyorkroomwithaview.com on Staten Island above the free ferry – a 15-minute walk or a fast reliable bus ride with direct connections from the boat. At $60.00 per night per person ($70.00 double) this large room with windows on two walls overlooking Manhattan can’t be beat. A self-serve breakfast is included as well as helpful suggestions for getting the most out of your New York vacation.
If you can plan your trip three months in advance, book a room at Leo House on 23rd Street in Manhattan. Small, spartan and clean rooms start at $90.00 per night for a single with shared bath.
Check Hotwire.com for last-minute room specials. Hoboken, NJ is a quick train ride away from Manhattan with much more affordable rooms.
Get a seven day unlimited metro card even if you’re only in town a few days – good on all trains and buses.
Consider bike travel as new cycling routes are being added.
Get out of Manhattan. Brooklyn/Williamsburg, Queens and the Bronx all offer excellent sights and dining at better prices than you’ll pay in Manhattan.
Take the Ikea ferry (free on weekends) from pier 11 at the South Seaport just past the free Staten Island ferry for a chance to whip across the water to Red Hook, Brooklyn with great views of Governor’s Island.
Visit commercial art galleries for free. Check out the latest in contemporary art in Chelsea, Soho and the Lower East Side.
Check websites of museums for free days or evenings.
Get great deals on must-see New York Museums and Attractions with a CityPASS coupon booklet.
Check Time Out New York online for daily lists of free things to do in New York City.
Take a hike along the constantly expanding High Line urban garden trail.
